Get Out Of Your Own Way

“Get out of your own way and deliver the message” – advice I received from my mentor when I began to tap into my own ability to connect to and communicate with the spirit realm.

For a gal who is inquisitive by nature and questions every little thing, this was counter-intuitive. I thought getting out of my own way was going to pose a problem, until I was reminded of a moment during early sobriety which helped me to make the connection. When I reflected upon this moment, a lightbulb went off and I ‘got it’! I understood the advice my mentor had shared with me.

I had been trying like the dickens to accomplish Step 3 of the 12 Steps: ‘Make a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.’ Each and every day I would get down on my knees and implore my God to take my will, while impatiently demanding He explain why He hadn’t already done so. Then one night, while standing outside a meeting hall a woman who was three days sober asked me how I was managing to stay sober for ‘so long’ (three months). I replied, without missing a beat, “I haven’t done anything – He has!” (He, meaning my God, the deity to whom I had been feverishly praying.) Up until that moment, I had diligently been trying to accomplish something that I had already accomplished. In that moment I realized I had already surrendered my will. What a realization! All I had to do was get out of my own way.

Oftentimes you don’t know what you don’t know and you force your will to try to make something happen; when the Universe, God, your intuition or your ancestors in spirit have other plans for you. As soon as I stepped out of my own way, no longer attempting to interpret nor make sense out of the messages I received, conversations with spirit flowed effortlessly.

People are amazed by my ability to connect and converse with those in spirit. Yes, it is a gift and yes, I do consider myself blessed to be able to bring your ancestors and loved ones through. I must tell you, you are able to do the same, if only you get out of your own way and allow yourself to hear their messages. It’s no different from speaking with, say your mother, on the telephone. There are some prerequisites I urge you to follow;

Develop a sense of belief. Childlike wonder works ideally for me. I delight in everything, all God’s creatures, and you can too. Believe it is possible. Adopt my mantra, “It is not that I’ll believe it when I see it, it is because I believe it I will see it.” Suspend any disbelief you may have and experiment with the theory that ‘everything is possible’. Listen to thyself – yes – thyself. You are, after all, your ancestors and you are a direct link to your loved ones. Listen to their messages/Validate their presence. The spirits report to me that they sometimes experience difficulties connecting with you – they ‘knock’ at your door, but you do not hear nor open it. Pay attention to nuances: the songs on the radio, the cardinal outside your window, the voice in your head (no, you are not crazy – your mother is ‘calling’!).

When you remove yourself from the process, you open the window to all types of possibilities and you are never, ever alone. So get out of your own way and allow the love and conversation to flow. You will be amazed. I guarantee you that.
