I’m Not Dropping Out – I’m Detoxing
Have you grown completely comfortable with your electronic appendage which has attached itself to your hand? Does it have total control over your thoughts and deeds?
If it has total control you may need to assess the relationship with your best companion and take steps to disengage and reevaluate. If it has not yet taken total control over your thoughts and deeds, it is just a matter of time before it does. If you have considered either scenario or if the thought of this appendage becoming too toxic – good for you. There’s still time to get help.
It is fair to say, for those of us who have made many rotations around the sun, that we have experienced many changes in many areas of life from fashion trends and food crazes to music styles and the evolution of technology. Much has improved the quality of our lives. However, I have found many improvements have morphed from helping to make our lives easier to nearly completely controlling every facet of our lives, to the point of freakiness. I have always enjoyed, nay thrived on, thinking for myself and I suspect you may as well. It feels as if we have become one of Rod Serling’s episode of the Twilight Zone. His stories of the past have become our present. I am all for improvements but when do we slow our roll? When is enough – enough?
Our phone, laptop, desktop, tablet, any connected device, sees us, hears us, knows us and thinks for us. And the intelligence powering these devices is getting smarter and deeply territorial.
Have you ever ‘Googled’ a question only to have the answer appear on one of your social media accounts? Better yet, has your spouse or someone you are close to ever ‘Googled’ a question only to have their answer appear on one of your social media accounts? Aside from an invasion of privacy – not that privacy exists anymore – that appendage has a huge appetite for getting to know you on a deep level, whether you want to become that close or not.
Has that appendage become so dependent upon you that it has you convinced you need to spend every waking hour with it? Does it lead you to believe unless you’re checking this account or that you’re not “in the know” and falling behind with news of the day? If so, the question is who is addicted to whom and what does one do about it?
I have made the decision not to drop out, but to detox. Yes, I am taking the first step in a targeted digital detox. The benefits include a significant drop in anxiety and insomnia, restoration of your brain to sustain focus and attention and lower stress levels. If you would like to join me, simply reach out.
