To Thine Own Self Be True

“To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day” a famous line (from William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet) promotes self-awareness and living in alignment with your core values. It encourages authenticity and integrity. The philosophy suggests that if you are genuinely honest and loyal to your own principles, you will naturally treat others with respect.

One would believe that being true to thine own self begins with truth telling. However, given our prevailing cultural climate, truth telling appears to have taken a back seat and our silence is being dictated by fear and recrimination.

We have been subjected to an inordinate amount of cruelty and blatant disregard on levels we are not equipped to process, let alone understand. It can feel as if truth tellers have become targeted, making it nearly impossible to feel safe or supported in speaking truth. But speaking truth we must, if we are to be true to thine own self. My mother loved to garden and delighted in sharing her passion and the fruits of her labor. She was in “heaven” every time she was care-taking her little corner of the world. While she walked this earth plane she taught me well and continues to teach me from heaven above.

A new year typically inspires new resolutions. As you turn the calendar page you find yourself resolute once again. Your mind races with the thought of achieving unlimited possibilities. For many, the beginning of a new year goes hand-in-hand with clearing the slate as boundless opportunities stretch out in front of you.

You resolve to begin anew; to pay more attention to how you fuel and care for your fabulous body, or maybe you will find a new job this year, or perhaps give up an old (less than desirable) habit. Whatever you decide, you absolutely decide to pay more attention and focus on achieving your goals.
