What Will You Leave Behind?

A new year, a new month or a new day typically represents a new beginning. It can serve as an ideal space in time to begin anew. However in order to begin anew you must be ready, willing and able to let go of that which no longer serves you ‒ leave it all behind. Bless it and move along.

While you may be ready and even willing to do that, you may for some unknown reason, be unable to do so. You may continue to repeat that behavior ‒ you know, the one which no longer serves you, but you cannot seem to let go of because you think “next time it will be different.” Albert Einstein once defined insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Although this past year has fostered a level of insanity unlike any you may have previously experienced, I do not believe you want to take that which does not serve you into the New Year. And I do not believe you are insane.

I do believe you have what it takes to transform that behavior, let it go, or leave it behind. You may simply require a modicum of encouragement and guidance.

Here’s what I suggest you do:

  • Begin by identifying what behavior or habit is standing in your way, tripping you up or holding you back.
  • Write it down in as much detail as possible. For example, “I want to be more optimistic, greet each day with a good feeling, but this world gets me down.” Or, “I keep pushing things off, not meeting my personal goals and then I make excuses for myself and feel worse.”
  • Now write that in the affirmative: “I will wake each morning, focus on everything for which I am grateful and hold that gratitude in my heart all day long.” Or “Today I will set one goal and achieve it, even if I have to move mountains. I can and will do this because I am strong, determined and capable.”
  • Once you have taken these steps, write a ‘Dear John’ letter to that which may have served you yet no longer does. “Dear Pessimism, while you may have helped me get through a rough period of time, I must let you go…” and write your reasons for doing so. For example, “I am letting you go because you have held me back or caused undue sadness in my life. You may have provided me with strength once, but now I feel drained.” If you care to transform the less than ideal energy into ideal energy, write your letter accordingly.
  • Upon completion of your letter, you may want to release your desires, intentions or thoughts to the universe by blessing and then burning your letter.
  • Celebrate the release. Feel it. Believe it. Be it.

No longer will you wonder what you will leave behind. You will have left it behind. Kudos!
